Ipswich Poetry Feast 2009

I was very honoured last night to be recognised at the 2009 Ipswich Poetry Feast competition, taking second place in the Open – Other category. It is fantastic to be recognised by such highly esteemed peers.
The winning poem was “Between Barcaldine and us”. I wrote this while visiting Barcaldine on a work Toolbox Talks trip through Central Queensland during 2008.

You can see all the other poems including the winning poem by Ashley Capes, and the judges reports, by going here:

Congratulations Vanessa! It is a brilliant poem… really took me into the moment. Love the lines:

“I’m ghosting in a town of worker’s pubs/ finding refuge in random characteristics”

Thank you Graham – Barcaldine is a pretty special place with a hard to define vibe about it. The feedback is great, and is incredibly helpful for me as I work at becoming a better writer.

    Hi Vanessa, congratulations indeed!

A great poem – I especially loved this section here

” working telephone text into dialects
    and with hands, cellophane crisp
    decoding your face ”

    Ashley
