two poems at Plumwood Mountain

Thank you to John Charles Ryan for selecting two of my poems for the latest issue of Plumwood Mountain – 7.1 Plant Poetics.

Plumwood Mountain is an Australian Journal of Ecopoetry and Ecopoetics edited by Anne Elvey. I’m so pleased to have these two poems join some really wonderful writing in this issue.

You can read Silky Oak and Banksia Serrata now.

Sky (for Maryanne)

A little poem that’s been knocking around a while, that pandemic conditions have given me some time to re-shape. For you, Maryanne Oliver – one of the most inspiring artists, dreamers, warriors I know.

Sky

for Maryanne

In the slender bridge of day

between bruised labours

she re-imagines the sky

through right-angled

fingers and thumbs

a duck egg in blue

a dandelion head blown,

a shadow drift

Over day’s virgin canvas

she is cloud-veil, effortless

she is bird-form

or any other early riser

precision-drawn, bright

a flight-hop dancer,

cadmium-splashed

scissor-blade quick

On a table-topped summit,

she gathers the sky

reveals herself in watercolour

in a bell’s pure aftermath

radiance-struck

a finger-framed day

sunshine, shaken out

dust-mote weave

everywhere, the sky

and she.
