2021 wrap-up

I’ve realised I have not updated this blog since the launch of Botanical Skin in July 2021, but since then, my poems have been quietly finding their way into journals and anthologies.

Most recently, ‘Waitakere’ was selected by guest editors Lucy Dougan and Michelle Cahill for the Australian Poetry Journal Anthology Vol 9. It’s always brilliant to be included in these anthologies alongside so many fantastic voices.

My poem ‘Way-finding in the Tempest’ was also short-listed for the 2021 ACU Prize for Poetry. This was the third time a poem of mine has been shortlisted in this prestigious competition. It was great that the poem found its way into the Prize Anthology entitled ‘Resilience’ which was also the theme for this year’s poetry prize.

Two of my poems were selected by Julia Kaylock and Denise O’Hagan for the Poetry for the Planet (an anthology of imagined futures). ‘Menindee’ features in the section ‘country – a cautionary tale’ and ‘Silky Oak’ features in the section ‘a lens on biodiversity’. I was also very honoured to be asked to read as part of the launch event for the anthology – and Menindee was the piece that I read. I really love this anthology and particularly the many new voices I’d not read before which were included.

Other publications this year included Cordite (No Theme 10) – which featured my poem Moths and the DiBiase Poetry competition website in the States which featured my poem Silky Oak.

Of course the highlight of the year was certainly the launch of my fifth book of poems – Botanical Skin. I loved working with Calanthe Press on this book and the launch was a really special event for me. Calanthe has a new website coming soon and is set to publish more amazing Queensland poets in 2022, so stay tuned.
